Biography
Egyptian striker Nagy, commonly known as Gedo, joined the Tigers on loan in January 2013 to add goalscoring prowess to Steve Bruce’s successful promotion push. He immediately scored goals and left a positive impression, but after the initial excitement his influence waned and foot surgery in May 2013 meant he had to return to his parent club. However in September 2013 Gedo again signed on a season long loan but he failed to make any impression in the Premier League and played his last game for the Tigers at Middlesbrough in the first fixture of the club’s FA Cup run that culminated in a Wembley final.
Mohamed Nagy Ismail Afash was born in Damanhur, an Egyptian city on the Nile Delta, and started his career at his local team, Egyptian Second Division side Ala’ab. In July 2005 he was signed by Alexandria-based Egyptian Premier League side Al Ittihad. He made his debut in August 2005 against Zamalek but struggled for game time subsequently and ended his first season with 8 goalless appearances. he scored his first goal for Al Ittihad in in August 2006 against Harras Modoud but it wasn’t until the 2008/09 season that he became a first team regular. He scored eleven goals during the 2009/10 season to establish his reputation as a reliable goalscorer, netting his first hattrick in a May 2010 Egypt Cup tie against Tanta SC and coming to global attention with his African Cup of Nations goalscoring exploits. At the end of the 2009/10 season Gedo had scored 16 goals in 87 appearances for Al-Ittihad.
Despite earlier reports linking Gedo to a move to Zamalek, in July 2010 he transferred to Cairo-based Egyptian giants Al-Ahly. He continued to demonstrate his prowess in front of goal as Al-Ahly lifted the 2010/11 Premier League title, but when a February 2012 match between Al-Ahly and Al-Masry in Port Said ended in a riot the 2011/12 season was abandoned. Gedo was prominent in Al-Ahly’s victory in the 2012 CAF Champions League, scoring in the decisive second leg of the final against Tunisian side Esperance but the 2012/13 Premier League campaign was abandoned due to political unrest in Egypt, freeing Gedo for his loan move to Hull City.
After his second spell at Hull City in the 2013/14 season Gedo returned to title-winning Al-Ahly for the second half of the season but he struggled to find the net and his season ended early in May 2014 due to a cruciate ligament injury. He returned to first team action in May 2015 but was used sparingly and he left the Cairo giants in October 2015 having scored 20 goals in 89 appearances across five turbulent years.
Gedo signed for Egyptian Premier League side El-Entag, a Cairo-based club often known as Military Production, and he made his debut that month against his former side Al-Ittihad. In February 2016 he netted a hattrick against Ismaily and ended the 2015/16 season with seven goals in 35 appearances. In August 2016 he transferred to another Premier League side El-Mokawloon and in two seasons with the Nasr City side he scored ten goals in 56 appearances. He switched to Hurghada-based Egyptian Premier League side El Gouna in July 2018 and scored three goals in 46 appearances before leaving the club in October 2020 and announcing his retirement in January 2021.
Gedo was a noted Egypt international whose goals led to considerable success for his country. He made his international debut in December 2009 against Malawi and scored his first goal a week later against Mali. He shot to worldwide prominence during the 2010 African Cup of Nations finals tournament held in Cameroon during January 2010. Gedo continued to score regularly for Egypt and when he won the last of his 36 senior caps in a March 2014 friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina he had scored 19 goals for his country.
