1172 Eliot Matazo

Biography

Versatile midfielder Eliot Matazo joined the Tigers during the January 2025 transfer window and quickly demonstrated his hard working and accurate passing attributes, scoring the opener against Stoke City in his first start in January 2025.

Eliot Matazo was born in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, a suburb east of Belgian capital Brussels, to parents hailing from two African countries, Congo and Kenya. He spent his childhood playing in the academy setup at Belgian side Anderlecht and attracted a strong reputation that extended beyond the environs of Brussels. In July 2018 Matazo joined the academy at French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco and rapidly moved through the Under-19 side to the B team and the first team squad. He made his senior debut for Monaco in September 2020 against RC Strasbourg and remained on the fringes of the first team for most of the 2020/21 season, scoring his first senior goal in May 2021 against Stade Reims. In August 2021 he made his debut on European competition, a Champions League qualifier against Sparta Prague, and by the end of the 2021/22 season he was a regular squad member often coming off the bench and starting occasional matches. This role continued throughout the 2022/23 season as he failed to hold down a regular first team start, a situation that persisted in the first half of the 2023/24 season.

In February 2024 Eliot joined Belgian Pro League side Royal Antwerp on a half-season loan, debuting in mid-February 2024 against KV Mechelen. He scored one goal for Antwerp, in May 2024 against his former club Anderlecht, and made 12 appearances that included starting in the Belgian Cup final, which Antwerp lost to Union St Gilloise. He returned to Monaco for the 2024/25 season and remained on the fringes of the first team, by January 2025 when he left for Hull City Matazo had scored two goals for Monaco in 84 appearances across four and a half seasons.

While at Anderlecht Eliot played for Belgium’s Under-16 side, making 12 appearances during the 2017/18 season and captaining the side on seven occasions. Between September and November 2019 he made three appearances for Belgium’s Under-19 side against Georgia, Netherlands and Czechia. In September 2021 he made his debut for Belgium’s Under-21 side against Turkiye and was a regular in that team for three seasons, taking his tally to 22 appearances when he played his final game against Czechia in November 2024.
