Biography

Midfielder Regan Slater joined the Tigers at the end of September 2020 on a season long loan and made his debut a few days later when he came on as substitute in a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle that saw City claim four wins out of four at the start of the league season. He played an important support role in the Autumn months, impressing when selected for Cup matches. As the season wore on Slater became a more prominent first team figure after skipper Richie Smallwood suffered an injury, his terrier-like tackling and pacy passing meant he played a pivotal role as the Tigers went on a fourteen game unbeaten run and secured the League One title. He returned to parent club Sheffield United in May 2021 with plaudits from Hull City commentators ringing in his ears, a situation that would not have been predicted three months earlier.
After half a season of frustration back at Sheffield United, where he impressed in the Reserves but was given no chance to break into the first team, Regan rejoined the Tigers at the end of January 2022 on a two and half year contract, becoming the first signing of new owner Acun Ilicali and new manager Shota Arveladze – his fee was a cut-price £50,000, a matter celebrated in song by City fans for seasons to come. He picked up in the Championship where he left off eight months earlier in League One, providing steely excellence at the base of City’s midfield, this time alongside Richie Smallwood and the threat of relegation was avoided with a handful of games to go.
At the start of the 2022/23 season Slater was again installed in the City first team midfield, this time alongside the classier figures of Ivorian international Jean Michael Seri and Turkish international Ozan Tufan – he continued to thrive and added forward thrust to his game. By the winter months Slater was deployed in a more attacking role down the left side of midfield and continued to excel, netting twice in a November 2022 3-2 win at Cardiff. Slater was one of Liam Rosenior’s most reliable performers during the 2023/24 season, deployed in midfield and at full back to great effect as the Tigers pushed up the table and flirted with the play-off places.
Slater began the 2024/25 season in City’s midfield as Tim Walter’s heart-attack football style swept through the club.
Regan Newman Slater was born in Gleadless in the southern suburbs of Sheffield and came through the Sheffield United academy, making his first team debut in November 2016 when he started an Associate Members’ Cup tie against Grimsby Town – Regan scored the opening goal that night in a 4-2 win and at the age of 17 years and 59 days he became the Blades’ youngest ever goalscorer in a competitive fixture. He went to make his League debut the following season but had made a total of just three senior appearances for Sheffield United by the time he left the club in January 2022. Regan spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Carlisle United where he made 41 senior appearances and scored twice, then spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Scunthorpe United where he made a further 15 appearances.
