Biography
Young defender Charlie Hughes joined the Tigers in August 2024 for a fee reputed to be £5 million. He sat on the City bench unused for the latter part of August and after an operation to remove his appendix he made his debut at Norwich City in early October 2024, coming on at half-time and making an error that led to the third goal in a 4-0 defeat.
Charles Roger Hughes was born in Golborne, a town between Wigan and Manchester, and spent his younger days in the academies at Manchester City and Liverpool before joining the Wigan Athletic academy in the summer of 2017, at the age of 14. After progressing through the under-age ranks Charlie signed his first professional contract in September 2021 and made his senior debut for the Latics in January 2022, in an EFL Trophy match against Arsenal Under-21. After a League Cup appearance in August 2022 against Fleetwood Town Hughes made his Championship debut on Boxing Day 2022 against Middlesbrough and played regularly for the first team for the rest of the 2022/23 season, scoring his first senior goal in April 2023 against Reading.
Wigan were relegated to League One for the 2023/24 season and Hughes continued to progress rapidly, becoming a fixture in the first team, captaining the side on many occasions and providing a goalscoring threat from set pieces – Hughes missed only three league matches all season. By his final game for the club in August 2024, on the opening day of the 2024/25 season, Hughes had scored five goals for Wigan Athletic in 76 senior appearances.
In November 2023 Hughes was selected for the England Under-20 squad for the first time and made his debut against Italy. In June 2024 he added two further Under-20 appearances against Sweden and Ireland.
