1150 Abdulkadir Omur

Biography

Exciting Turkish international attacking midfielder Abdulkadir “Abdus” Omur joined the Tigers for an unannounced seven figure fee in January 2024, making his debut a fortnight later and providing a rare bright spot in a disappointing defeat to Swansea City. Abdus was introduced gently into the first team frame but as the season drew to a close he was chosen more often, demonstrating his willing running, tight ball control and superb vision for a pass. By the end of the season, with City just failing to reach the play-offs, Abdus was one of the club’s most exciting performers.

Abdulkadir Omur, widely known by his nickname Abdus (ab-dush), was born in Carsibasi on the Northern Black Sea coast of Turkiye. By the age of 12 he was involved in the youth team setup at Trabzonspor, a Super Lig side based in the city of Trabzon found twenty miles east of his hometown. Identified quickly as a rising star on the national stage, Abdus was handed his first team debut in January 2016 at the age of 16, coming on for half an hour against Adanaspor in the Turkish Cup. He made his League debut for Trabzonspor in December 2016 against Basaksehir Istanbul and scored his first senior goal later that month in a Cup tie against Kizilcaboluk.

In August 2017 Omur became a regular first team choice for his club and quickly created a considerable buzz with his prodigious football talents, which attracted interest from big clubs across Europe. For six seasons he was a key part of the Trabzonspor side, although a knee injury kept him out for six months during the 2019/20 season and a broken ankle meant he missed four months of the 2020/21 season. He played in the Turkish Cup winning side at the end of the 2019/20 season, scoring the opener in a 2-0 win over Alanyaspor, and in the 2021/22 season Abdus’ seven goals helped Trabzonspor win the Turkish Super Lig title. He had achieved everything he could at Trabzonspor and in December 2023, after 25 goals in 211 senior appearances, Abdus was agitating for a move. After being briefly suspended by the club in January 2024 Omur joined Hull City on a three and half year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Omur was recognised by the Turkish international setup from a young age. He debuted at Under-15 level in February 2014 and quickly rose to the Under-16 side during the 2014/15 season, making 12 appearances and scoring once against Belgium. He captained the Turkiye Under-17 side during the 2015/16 season, making 15 appearances and scoring against Slovenia in September 2015. He made four appearances for the Under-18s in April 2017, by which time he had already debuted at Under-19 level in September 2016, making a total of 12 appearances at that level. In October 2017, while still only 18 years old, Abdus made his debut at Under-21 level against Cyprus – by November 2018 he had made seven appearances for the Under-21s.

In May 2019, four weeks before his 19th birthday, he won his first senior cap for Turkiye when he played 45 minutes in a friendly against Greece. He was a regular for the Turkiye team for much of the next two years, then had a break from international football before returning in November 2023 and adding two caps. He made his first appearance for Turkiye as a Hull City player in March 2023, coming on as a late substitute against Austria. In May 2024 he was selected for Turkiye’s preliminary Euro 2024 squad in Germany and won his second cap as a Tiger, and 14th cap overall, in June 2024 against Italy before being trimmed from the final squad of 26 players.
