1182 Akin Famewo

Biography

Centre back Akin Famewo joined Hull City in July 2025, having chosen to switch to the Tigers rather than extend his contract at financially stricken Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday. He made his debut from the bench in a League Cup tie against Wrexham and performed that support role during the opening weeks of the season.

Akinlolu Richard Olamide “Akin” Famewo was born in South East London to parents that hailed from Nigeria. By the age of 10 he was involved in the academy setup at Luton Town and progressed through the Hatters youth team ahead of signing his first professional contract for the League Two side in July 2016. He made his senior debut for the Hatters in August 2016 against Newport County and was on the fringes of the first team squad as Luton reached the end of season play-offs before losing at the semi-final stage to Blackpool. He played a similar role during the 2017/18 season, starting only one League Two game against Chesterfield in January 2018 as the Kenilworth Road side won automatic promotion to League One. By the 2018 close season he had made 13 senior appearances for Luton Town.

In July 2018 Famewo joined League Two side Grimsby Town on a season-long loan and started the 2018/19 season as a first team regular. Akin’s form for Grimsby Town was such that he was recalled from his loan in January 2019 after 12 senior appearances. The next day he transferred to Championship side Norwich City for an undisclosed fee and spent the rest of the season in the Canaries’ under-23 team. With Norwich City promoted to the Premier League for the 2019/20 season Famewo’s opportunities for first team action were few and far between. He made his debut in a September 2019 EFL Trophy match against Oxford United and captained the Under-23 side for the first half of the season. In January 2020 he was loaned to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren for the rest of the season, where he started regularly and made 13 appearances. He returned to Norwich City when the COVID19 pandemic halted football in March 2020 and when the Premier League resumed behind closed doors in July 2020 Akin made his Premier League debut on the last day of the season against Manchester City.

In September 2020 Akin joined League One side Charlton Athletic on a season long loan, making his debut days later against Lincoln City. Despite missing three months of football due to injury he made 22 appearances for the Addicks and in July 2021 he returned to The Valley for a second season long-loan, adding a further 40 appearances and scoring his first senior goal against AFC Wimbledon in February 2022. At the end of the season Charlton elected not to exercise an option to buy Famewo and he returned to Norwich City. He left shortly afterwards having made just 4 appearances for the Canaries.

In July 2022 Famewo signed for League One side Sheffield Wednesday. An injury sustained on his Owls debut against Milton Keynes Dons meant he missed four months of football, his return in December 2022 coincided with a long unbeaten run as Wednesday reached the play-offs and won the Wembley final against Barnsley – though Akin was not involved in these matches. He was a first team regular during the 2023/24 season as Sheffield Wednesday battled against relegation only to survive in the closing weeks thanks to the leadership of youthful German manager Danny Rohl. In the 2024/25 season Wednesday finished in mid-table despite severe financial problems caused by their unpredictable owner, while Akin again missed a large part of the season due to injury. By the expiry of his contract in June 2025 Famewo had scored one goal for Sheffield Wednesday in 73 appearances.
