1160 Kasey Palmer

Biography

Attacking midfielder Kasey Palmer joined the Tigers on the August 2024 transfer deadline day and made his debut off the bench against Leeds United 24 hours later. He scored his first goal for the Tigers in the club’s first League win of the season at Stoke City in mid-September 2024.

Kasey Remel Palmer was born in Lewisham, South London, and was involved with the Charlton Athletic academy as a youngster before swutching to Chelsea’s academy at 16 years of age in March 2013. He made his way through the Blues’ academy system and won an FA Youth Cup winners medal in May 2014, playing in both legs of the final against Fulham – he won a second FA Youth Cup winners medal in April 2015 when playing in both legs of the final against Manchester City. By the 2015/16 season he was a regular goalscorer for the Blues’ Under-21 side and in April and May 2016 Palmer sat on the Chelsea bench for two Premier League fixtures but did not get on the pitch.

In July 2016 his development continued with a season-long loan move to Championship side Huddersfield Town. In August 2016 he scored on his senior debut against Brentford and he remained in the Terriers first team until a February 2017 achilles injury appeared to end his season. He returned to fitness for the end of season play-off final against Reading and played 22 minutes of extra time before Huddersfield defeated Reading in a penalty shoot-out and made an unlikely climb to the Premier League – Kasey scored five goals in 27 appearances during his breakout season.

In July 2017 Palmer signed an extended contract with Chelsea and agreed to return to Huddersfield Town for a second season on loan. He made his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace in August 2017 but a hamstring injury sustained at the start of September 2017 sidelined him three months. He struggled for first team action when he returned to fitness and in January 2018 his loan was terminated early after just 5 further appearances for the Terriers. A quick turnaround saw Kasey join Championship side Derby County in January 2018 on a half-season loan, he scored two goals in 16 appearances as the Rams gave him his second play-off campaign in successive seasons, this one ending in defeat to Fulham at the semi-final stage.

Palmer began the 2018/19 season on loan at Championship side Blackburn Rovers, where he was used as a support player and scored three goals in 17 appearances before returning to Chelsea in January 2019. He spent the second half of the season on loan at Championship side Bristol City, netting two goals in 17 appearances as the Robins fell just short of the play-off places. His form at Ashton Gate was sufficient for Bristol City to pay a reputed £3.5 million for Kasey’s services in August 2019 and he started the 2019/20 season as a first team regular before dropping to a support role from December 2019 onwards. Back on the fringes of the first team at the start of the 2020/21 season, Palmer scored twice for the Robins in a September 2020 League Cup tie against Northampton Town before joining Championship rivals Swansea City on loan in October 2020, he scored once in 12 appearances for the Swans before being recalled by Bristol City in January 2021. He was immediately restored to the Bristol City first team and helped the side narrowly avoided relegation. He began the 2021/22 season in the Robins’ first team but was again marginalised from October 2021 onwards and left the club in the 2022 close season having scored six goals for Bristol City in 62 appearances.

In June 2022 he made the switch to Championship side Coventry City and quickly settled into Mark Robins’ side before a hamstring injury sustained in February 2023 appeared to end his season early. He returned to fitness for the Sky Blues’ play-off final at Wembley in May 2023, mirroring his efforts for Huddersfield Town six years earlier, though this time he saw his side suffer defeat to Luton Town after a penalty shoot-out. He was again a first team choice during the 2023/24 season, though from September 2023 he missed three months of football due to a hamstring problem. He scored two goals in the Sky Blues’s FA Cup campaign, helping them reach the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United although Kasey was not selected for that last four tie played at Wembley Stadium. He began the 2024/25 season on the Coventry City bench and scored his final goal for the club in August 2024 against his former side Bristol City. He transferred to Hull City a week later having scored nine goals in 75 appearances for Coventry City.

Kasey was part of the England under-age setup throughout his time at Chelsea. He made 3 appearances for England Under-17s during February 2013, then added a soiltary England Under-18 appearance against Hungary in October 2013. He scored in each of two England Under-20 matches against Canada in March 2016 and in May 2016 he debuted for England Under-21 against Portugal, making 4 appearances that month. In September 2017 he returned for two more Under-21 appearances, scoring his only goal at that level against Latvia.

In March 2021 Kasey switched his allegiance to Jamaica, for whom he qualified through the heritage of his parents. His debut in March 2021 against the United States was not immediately followed up by further call-ups and he had to wait until September 2023 for a return to the international fold – in June 2024 he made three appearances for Jamaica in the 2024 Copa America finals. In September 2024 Kasey won his first caps as a Hull City player in CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers against Cuba and Honduras.
