Biography

Pacy Canadian wideman Liam Millar joined Tim Walter’s Tigers in August 2024 for a reputed £3 million fee and made his debut a day later when impressing off the bench against Bristol City, then setting up an equaliser for Lewie Coyle at Plymouth the following weekend. After a string of all-action performances, In October 2024 Millar injured his knee in an innocuous challenge against Burnley and missed the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

Liam Alan Millar was born in Toronto, Canada, his father was an electrician that worked in the film and TV industry who had a brief footballing career in England. Liam and his father moved to the UK in 2012 so that Liam could join the academy at Fulham, in July 2016 he switched to the academy at Premier League side Liverpool.

In August 2016 Liam made a remarkable debut for Liverpool’s Under-18 side, scoring a hattrick against Blackburn Rovers. He continued to work his way through the Reds’ academy system and signed his first professional contract in September 2016. In the 2017/18 season he played in the UEFA Youth League and broke into Liverpool’s Under-21 side, continuing on a trajectory that was heading towards the Reds’ first team. In January 2019 Millar joined Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock on a half season loan, making his senior debut in February 2019 against Heart of Midlothian and scoring his first senior goal in March 2019 against St Mirren – his spell at Kilmarnock yielded one goal in 14 appearances.

In August 2019 Millar returned to Kilmarnock for a second half-season loan, scoring one goal in 22 further appearances. He returned to Liverpool in January 2020 made his senior debut for the Reds in a February 2020 FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town. In September and November 2020 Liam added three further senior appearances in the EFL Trophy for Liverpool’s Under-21 side, scoring twice against Port vale in the third of those games. In January 2021 he embarked on a half-season loan at League One side Charlton Athletic that yielded in two goals in 27 appearances and attracted considerable attention with his direct and effective style of attacking play. By the end of the 2020/21 season Liam’s five years at Liverpool had yielded two goals in just 4 senior appearances.

In July 2021 Millar joined Swiss Super League side FC Basel on a four year contract. He made his Basel debut against Grasshoppers Zurich in July 2021 and scored his first goal for the club in a September 2021 Cup tie against FC Rorschach-Goldach 17. He served the Basel first team during most of the 2021/22 season in both domestic and European competitions until a fractured elbow sustained in May 2022 ended his season with a handful of fixtures remaining. He continued to play a prominent role in the Basel first team during the 2022/23 season as the club reached the semi-finals of both the Europa Conference League and the Swiss Cup, losing to Fiorentina and Young Boys Berne respectively. By the end of August 2023 Liam had scored eleven goals in 98 appearances for Basel.

In September 2023 Millar joined English Championship side Preston North End on a season-long loan. He impressed with his pacy direct style on the left side of the attack and scored five goals in 36 appearances for a Lilywhites side that was not renowned for its attacking elan. Having returned to Switzerland in the 2023 close season for pre-season training and being forced to train alone, Millar accepted the chance to return to the Championship and join Hull City in August 2024.

Millar was recognised by his country’s international teams from a young age, having already been involved at Under-17 level, Liam was handed his Canada Under-20 debut in February 2017 against Honduras and added two further appearances that month, then making four appearances for the Under-21 side during 2018. In March 2018 he made his debut for the Canada senior team against New Zealand and quickly became an important part of Canada’s improving international side. He scored his first goal for Canada in July 2023 against Cuba as part of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2023 tournament, in the summer of 2024 he was prominent in the Canada side that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America Finals held in the United States. In September 2024 Millar won his first caps as a Hull City player, in friendlies against United States and Mexico.
