Biography

Young Wales forward Lewis Koumas joined the Tigers on a half season loan at the end of January 2026, twenty four hours later he scored a crowd-pleasing winning goal at Blackburn Rovers within minutes of his debut introduction from the bench. he went on to play a supporting role to the first team and netted further important goals against Derby County and Wrexham.
Lewis Terence Koumas was born in Chester, the son of former Tranmere Rovers, West Bromwich Albion and Wigan Athletic midfielder Jason Koumas, through whom Lewis has Welsh and Greek Cypriot heritage. Lewis joined Liverpool’s academy in 2016 at the age of 11, having previously been associated with Tranmere Rovers, and worked his way through the age groups at the Reds while attending school in Bebington on the Wirral Peninsula. Lewis signed his first professional contract for Liverpool in January 2023, having started playing and scoring for the Reds’ Under-18s side in April 2022. He made his senior debut for Liverpool in a September 2022 EFL Trophy match against Rochdale.
Lewis was on the fringes of the first team squad during the 2023/24 season, he was an unused substitute in three Europa League ties and three Premier League matches while also playing in three EFL Trophy matches. In January 2024 he scored an FA Youth Cup hattrick against Arsenal’s Under-18 side, a month later in February 2024 he was an unused substitute in the League Cup final at Wembley, which Liverpool won after defeating Chelsea. Three days later Lewis started an FA Cup tie against Southampton and scored his first senior goal, attracting much attention as a result of his performance and the identity of his father. This took his Liverpool tally to one goal in 5 senior appearances.
In August 2024 Lewis joined Championship side Stoke City on a season long loan. He made his debut for the Potters in August 2024 in a League Cup tie against Carlisle United and scored his first goal for the club later that month against West Bromwich Albion. Koumas was part of the first team squad throughout the 2024/25 season and ended up scoring six goals for Stoke City in 49 appearances. In August 2025 Koumas was again loaned out, this time to newly promoted Championship side Birmingham City for whom he made his debut later that month in the League Cup against Port Vale. After one goal – in January 2026 against Coventry City – in 25 appearances for Birmingham City his loan was terminated in January 2026 so he could join Hull City for the remainder of the season.
Lewis qualified to play international football for England, Wales and Cyprus but chose to follow his father and play for Wales from a young age, making his debut for Wales Under-19s against Scotland in March 2023. He took his tally for the Under-19s to 4 appearances in October 2023, then in March 2024 he played twice for the Wales Under-21 side against Lithuania (scoring a goal) and Morocco. In June 2024 Koumas was fast-tracked to the senior squad, winning his first cap against Gibraltar. He remained a part of the Wales squad for the next two seasons, in March 2026 he won his tenth cap against Northern Ireland, his first international appearance while a Hull City player.
