Biography
Left sided defender and midfielder Matty Jacob had sat on the City first team bench for ten senior fixtures between September 2020 and December 2023 before finally making his debut on New Years Day 2024 in the pouring rain at Hillsborough. In his second appearance, and first start, for the Tigers five days later in the FA Cup against Birmingham City, he put in a man of the match performance and scored the late equaliser. Within two months he had carved out an important first team squad support role and earned a new three year contract with the Tigers, ending the 2023/24 season as first choice left back.
Matthew James “Matty” Jacob was born in Cudworth near Barnsley but moved to Willerby at the age of four and later attended Wolfreton School. He joined Hull City’s academy at 8 years old and progressed to sign his first professional contract in May 2019. He built a strong reputation in City’s Under-21 side and spent the 2021/22 season at National League North champions Gateshead, learning his trade in a winning side and scoring two goals in 37 appearances. On his return to the Tigers and he waited patiently for another eighteen months before making his debut, recovering from a serious knee injury during that time.
Matty is the grandson of former Tigers centre half Geoff Barker, a matter of pride that he bears on his left thigh. Geoff and Matty are the first grandfather/grandson pair to have both scored for Hull City and the second combination to have both played for the Tigers, the first being Jimmy and Matthew Bloomer.
