703 Jimmy Graham

Biography

Glaswegian left back Jimmy Graham joined the Tigers in August 1994 to be reunited with his former Bradford and Rochdale manager, now Tigers boss, Terry Dolan. He was immediately thrust into first team action and as the Tigers nudged the fringes of the play-offs Graham was an ever-present for seven months. Jimmy’s fans may not have cared that he had no hair, but they were sad to see him miss the last seven games of the season. In 1995/96 the Tigers drifted badly and were relegated mathematically in April, but functionally by January. Graham suffered recurrent knee injuries and missed 25 consecutive games in the middle of the season, in which City won only three times in five months. Jimmy returned to first team action in late-February 1996 and scored his only City goal in a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. But at the end of the season City were heading for the fourth tier and Graham’s contract was not renewed.

Jimmy Graham was born in Glasgow into a footballing family. His middle brother Tommy was a journeyman midfielder who made his mark at Scunthorpe and Scarborough, while his more talented elder brother Arthur played for Aberdeen, Leeds United, Manchester United and Scotland. Arthur Graham was at Bradford City in the mid-1980s when Jimmy, 17 years his junior, was setting out on his professional career and the brothers were bought together at Valley Parade. He made his Bantams debut in February 1989 and made a further six first team appearances before joining Rochdale on loan in November 1989. That loan was made into a permanent move in July 1990 and Jimmy spent four seasons at Spotland under the management of Terry Dolan and Dave Sutton, making 172 appearances in all competitions (including the loan spell) and scoring two goals. His ‘Dale contract had expired when he joined City in the 1994 close season.

Graham joined Guiseley in August 1996 and served the Northern Premier League side for six months. In February 1997 he moved to Northern Premier League rivals Lancaster City and he remained with the Dolly Blues for five years until his retirement in 2002. After football Jimmy returned to Glasgow and was employed as a social worker and railway staff at Glasgow Central station..

  1. Loved Jimmy Graham! Remember when Linton Brown said the only reason he won man of the match every week was cos the fans thought he was about 60 years old? ?. Miss those days (kind of) , however awful 1990’s was for us!
