432 Johnny Stephens

Biography

Born in Cardiff, Welsh forward Stephens signed for City at the age of 17 from junior football in the South Wales valleys. He was mainly used as a reserve team player for his first three seasons but as he gained experience and reputation, he was used more in the mid-1950s. When the Tigers dropped to Division Three North in 1956 Stephens career was resurgent and he was ever present during 1956/57, scoring 12 goals in League and Cup. Stephens form continued into the next season but his time to an end during the 1958 close season, when he signed for Swindon Town.

Stephens struggled for first team action at Swindon and after a year and a half at the County Ground he switched to Coventry in February 1960. That summer he refused a new contract and drifted out of the game.

Stephens was a schoolboy international for Wales and won a Wales Under-23 cap in 1958 against England.

Stephens returned to Wales and settled in Cardiff, where he died in February 1992.

  1. I am Johnny Stephens’s son. I would love to receive any information about my fathers playing career or an idea of where to find out more.
With regards a few of the facts above, he settled in Cardiff and actually died in February 1982 aged 56.

    • Hi Carl, thank you so much for contributing to the website! The details I have about your father are pretty much all I have. There are some career stats from this site…

An that’s where I got Johnny’s death details from. Apologies i typed it in wrong when I said 1972. Did you mean 1992 in your message rather than 1982? That would make him 56.

If you have any pictures from his playing days I’d love to put them on the site. Let me know on this message thread or at mike@oncloudseven.com
