Biography
Experienced outside right Cliff Chadwick, who also spent time on the left at the newly opened Boothferry Park, served City in the club’s first season back in the Football League after World War Two. He scored some goals early in the season then drifted out of the first eleven and moved on in the 1947 close season.
Chadwick hailed from Bolton and had an amateur career as a youngster with Turton and Fleetwood. At 19 years old he signed for Oldham Athletic and within six months his form had attracted the attention of First Division side Middlesbrough, who signed him in February 1934. He was a popular figure at Ayresome Park for the next five years, combining regular goals with a side-hustle selling motor tyres.
His career development was hampered by the wartime closedown of the Football League competitions, but he remained active throughout the hostilities. He served the RAF as a physical training instructor and then a parachuting instructor, also completing four parachute combat operations on the European mainland. His regular parachuting led to him spending six months in hospital for operations on his knees, prior to joining the Tigers. While he was still registered to Middlesbrough, he played many games as a guest for Bolton Wanderers during the war. He also assisted Manchester United, playing for the Red Devils in the 1945 League Cup North final.
Chadwick transferred to Darlington in July 1947 then a year later he took up the role of player manager at North Eastern League side Stockton FC. He piloting The Ancients to the league title in 1951 and the FA Cup Thid Round in 1952. Chadwick remained in the Teesside area after his time at Stockton, establishing a physiotherapy practice in Middlesbrough before emigrating to Australia. He died in March 1999.
