Biography

John Joseph Martin, known as “James”, was born in Manchester and grew up in the Harpurhey district of North East Manchester with his widowed mother. A left winger who made his reputation playing in the Lancashire Combination with Bacup Borough, he signed professional terms with the Tigers in May 1935 after playing in three trial games for City’s Reserves the previous April. Martin was handed his first team debut by manager Jack Hill in late September 1935 and scored in his second game, a 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle, but when first choice winger Cliff Thorley returned to fitness three weeks later Martin was returned to City’s Reserves and was released in the 1936 close season.

In June 1936 James signed for Division Three North side Accrington Stanley where he made 6 appearances during the 1936/37 season. In June 1937 James joined Cheshire League side Macclesfield and later played for Great Harwood. He remained in Manchester working as a social club steward after his football career, he died in Manchester in 1980.
