Biography

Midfield enforcer John Lundstram joined Hull City at the end of July 2025, moving on a season-long loan from Turkish side Trabzonspor. He made his debut on the opening day of the 2025/26 season.
John David Lundstram was born in Liverpool, in July 2010 he joined his local Premier League side Everton on scholarship terms. A year later in June 2011 Lundstram signed his first professional contract for the Toffees and spent the 2011/12 season impressing in the Premier Reserve League. In February 2013 John joined League One promotion hunters Doncaster Rovers, making his senior debut that month against Yeovil Town and compiling 14 appearances as Rovers lifted the League One trophy and won promotion to the Championship.
At the start of the 2013/14 season more impressive performances in Everton’s Reserves led to Lundstram joining Championship strugglers Yeovil Town in November 2013, his three month loan spell yielded two goals in 13 appearances that featured his first senior goal in December 2013 against Blackpool. Returning to Everton in early March 2014, by the end of that month he was loaned to League One promotion chasers Leyton Orient – John made 9 appearances for the Os that included the League One play-off final at Wembley, which saw Orient defeated by Rotherham United after a penalty shootout.
In August 2014 was again on the move, joining Championship side Blackpool on a season long loan. The Tangerines struggled at the foot of the table for much of the 2014/15 season and in January 2015 John was recalled by Everton after 18 appearances for the Bloomfield Road side. A week later Lundstram returned to League One side Leyton Orient for a one month loan, adding 4 appearances, then in March 2015 he began his third loan spell of the season when he joined League One side Scunthorpe United, making 7 appearances for the Iron. Lundstram left Everton in July 2015 having never made a first team appearance for his first club.
Lundstram attracted considerable transfer interest during the 2015 close season and in August 2015 he chose to sign for League Two side Oxford United, making his debut in August 2015 against Notts County. In his first season of regular football he scored three goals as Oxford finished runners-up and won promotion to League One, he then played in all but one league game in the 2016/17 season and was made club captain as Oxford finished just outside the League One play-off places. By the 2017 close season Lundstram had scored four goals in 104 appearances for Oxford United.
In July 2017 newly promoted Championship side Sheffield United paid over £500,000 for John’s services, handing him a Blades debut in August 2017 against Brentford. Lundstram was part of the first team squad throughout the 2017/18 season but was absent for much of the 2018/19 season as Sheffield United won promotion to the Premier League. In August 2019 John made his Premier League debut against Bournemouth and remained in the first team picture for the whole season as the Blades achieved an unlikely top half finish. He remained part of the first team squad during the 2020/21 season that ended in relegation back to the Championship – by the 2021 close season when Lundstram’s contract expired he had scored eight goals in 120 appearances for Sheffield United.
In July 2021 Lundstram joined Scottish Premiership side Glasgow Rangers and made his Gers debut in July 2021 against Livingston. He was a vital part of the side that finished league runners-up in the 2021/22 season, as well as winning the Scottish FA Cup with a May 2022 Hampden Park victory over Heart of Midlothian that came three days after Rangers had lost the Europa League final in agonising circumstances, losing an extended penalty shootout in Seville to Eintracht Frankfurt. His second season at Rangers saw him miss only four matches in all competitions as Rangers finished runners-up to Auld Firm rivals Celtic in both the Scottish Premiership title race and in the Scottish League Cup final. A third season at Ibrox saw Lundstram again finish second to Celtic in the league as well as the Scottish FA Cup final, but he did claim a winners’ medal when Rangers won the Scottish League Cup, defeating Aberdeen in the December 2023 final played at Rangers’ Ibrox home. John left Rangers in June 2024 having scored eleven goals in 153 appearances across three seasons.
In June 2024 Lundstram joined Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, signing a three year deal after his Rangers contract had expired. He made his debut in a July 2024 Europa League tie against Slovakian side Ruzomberok and was a key player throughout the 2024/25 season as Trabzonspor finished in the top half of the League and reached the May 2025 Turkish Cup final, only to lose to Galatasaray. Lundstram scored four goals in 44 appearances for Trabzonspor in his first season, ahead of his July 2025 loan move to Hull City.
As a youngster at Everton John’s talent was quickly recognised by the England international coaches. He made his debut for England Under-17s in August 2010 against Finland and by July 2011 he had made 17 appearances, competing in the May 2011 UEFA Under-17s Euros finals played in Serbia and the June 2011 Under-17s World Cup finals hosted by Mexico. During the 2011/12 season John played twice for England Under-18s against Slovakia and Poland, then in May 2012 he graduated to the England Under-19 side and made his debut against Slovenia – during the 2012/13 season he scored two goals for the Under-19s in 13 appearances. In June 2013 he won a solitary England Under-20 cap against Iraq, at which point his international career drew to a close.
