997 Mohamed Diame

Biography

Senegalese midfield powerhouse Diame signed for City on 1 September 2014 and hit the ground running with great form and goals from the off.  Alas, he soon succumbed to injuries that limited his appearances, a probable contributory factor to City’s relegation.  Mo’s second season saw mixed form but in the end class told and Mo fired home the winning goal at Wembley to take City back to the Premier League.  By then the departure of Steve Bruce was imminent and Ehab Allam’s negligent season building efforts led Diame to return to the Championship with a big money move to Newcastle.

Born in Parisian suburb Cretiel, Diame was a graduate of France’s famous Clairefontaine national academy and joined RC Lens as an 18 year old.  He suffered ill health and dropped to lower league Spanish side CD Linares to rebuild his career.  Within a year he had moved on to Rayo Vallecano and after a successful season of powerful dribbling and goals he was lured to the Premier League, albeit the relatively modest environs of Wigan Athletic.  He excelled at Wigan over three years and moved on to West Ham United with a strong reputation.  Injury and an inability of managers to identify his best role in the team saw Diame fall out of favour, but not before he clattered Allan McGregor’s kidneys in a Premier League game and saw the gruff Scotsman sidelined for several months.

In June 2016 Newcastle United activated Diame’s release clause and lured him north for a season in the Championship that led to lifting the title and elevation once more to the top flight.  He stuck around the north east for three years before departing in 2019 to embark on a big pay day at Qatari side Al Ahli, a side he played for for two years. In April 2022 he returned to Europe, signing a short term deal for Spanish second division side Fuenlabrada. Leaving the Spanish side in January 2023, Diame returned to the Middle East and joined Qatari Second Division side Al-Sailiya, scoring once in 14 appearances during the remainder of the 2022/23 season, at which point his playing days drew to a close.

Through his father Diame qualified to play for Senegal, for whom he made his debut in 2011 and has been a regular in the senior XI since.
