Biography

Lucas Herrington, an eighteen year old Australian international centre back, joined Hull City in August 2026 for a fee of around £17 million after coming to worldwide prominence during the 2026 World Cup finals. His introduction to the Tigers’ first team began with a substitute appearance against season opneing opponents Manchester United, who he repelled with aplomb for thirty minutes, his first start four days later against Stoke City in the League Cup was imperious.

Lucas Herrington was born in Brisbane to Australian parents of Finnish, German and Zimbabwean descent. He played for several Brisbane-based youth teams during his childhood before joining the academy at Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar in 2019. An outsanding player during his teenage years, Lucas signed a scholarship contract with Brsibane Roar in September 2024 having spent the 2023 playing for the club’s Reserves side.

Lucas made his senior debut for Brisbane Roar in December 2024 against Western Sydney Wanderers and netted his first senior goal against Sydney FC in January 2025. Despite his tender years he immediately won a regular first team shirt and by January 2026 he had scored two goals in 29 appearances.

In January 2026 Herrington was signed by USA Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids, a deal having been negotiated in August 2025. Brisbane Roar received an unannounced record fee for this sale as well as a sell-on clause that was subsequently negotiated away for a payment of 560,000 Australian dollars. Herrington made his Rapids debut in February 2026 against Seattle Sounders and scored his first and only goal for the club a week later against Portland Timbers. Within six months he was attracting worldwide attention and played his last match for the club in August 2026 against Austin FC – he scored one goal for Colorado Rapids in 20 appearances. He signed for Hull City a few days later for a fee that would have netted Brisbane Roar a sell-on fee greatly in excess of the sum they negotiated a few weeks earlier.

Herrington’s talent meant he made rapid progress through the Australian international setup. In July 2024 he made 4 appearances for the Australia Under-19 side in a ASEAN Under-19 Championship played in Indonesia. In November 2024 he made his debut for the Austrlais Under-20 side against Kyrgyzstan, by October 2025 he had made 7 appearances at under-20 level. During June 2025 he made 4 appearances for the Australian Under-18 side managed by former Tiger Richard Garcia.

In March 2026 Lucas won his first cap for the Australia senior side in a pre-World Cup friendly against Cameroon. Herrington was then chosen for the Australia World Cup finals squad played in USA, Canada and Mexico. He started two matches in the 2026 finals included the Round of 32 match against Egypt, which Australia lost on a penalty shootout – Lucas struck the crossbar with his effort. That tie took Lucas’s tally to 6 senior caps for Australia.
