912 Bernard Mendy

Biography

French full back Mendy spent two seasons at City during the club’s first sojourn in the Premier League.  He was a decent defender, at times a genuine dangerous attacking and overlapping right back, and an eccentric character prone to crazy clearances and unexpected limb-flailing tackles.  His pinnacle came in big games at places like Manchester United and Liverpool, though his prominence in second season was reduced by injury.

Mendy was born in the Normandy region of France and started his professional career at Caen.  In 2000 Bernard signed for Paris St Germain where he stayed for eight years, one of which was spent on loan at Bolton Wanderers, where he came to the attention of Phil Brown.

Folloiwng his departure from Hull City, Mendy’s career wandered considerably.  A move to Odense in Denmark was followed by a return to France, this time further west in the Brittany region, signing for Brest.  Two seasons titting about there were followed by several spells in the Indian Super League and a brief spell in Cyprus.  Mendy ended his professional playing career in 2017.

While in his early 20s at Paris St Germain, shortly after his loan spell at Bolton, Mendy earned three caps for the French national team.
