Biography

Striker Paynter joined City from Port Vale in November 2005, initially on loan and then permanently that January. His bustling style was pleasing on the eye and he scored a couple of fine goals, including a proper thraker at Crewe. However the signing of Jon Parkin squeezed Paynter down the pecking order and he moved on the Southend on the eve of the 2006/07 season.
Liverpool-born Paynter was a youth team player at Port Vale throughout his teenage years, debuting two months before his seventeenth birthday in May 2001. He had two seasons of impressive goalscoring and goal creating feats that led to his move to the Tigers.
Following his short spell at City Paynter embarked on a career that flitted between League One and the Championship. His single season at Southend was not a success and a move to Swindon saw his goal tally rise again. After netting 29 goals in 2009/10, Leeds United acquired his services but in two seasons he again failed to impress regularly. Subsequent moves to Carlisle, Doncaster and Hartlepool saw Paynter’s career ease down the divisions and he retired in the summer of 2017. he went into football coaching and worked for Everton and Port Vale.
In March 2023 Paynter was appointed first team manager at Northern Premier League side Runcorn Linnets and guided his side the 2022/23 season play-offs. In May 2024 Billy again guided the Linnets to the play-offs, having finished the season second in the division, but his side was defeated by City of Liverpool FC at the semi-final stage. Paynter resigned his post two days later.
In August 2024 Billy was appointed manager at North Wales-based Cymru Premier League side Connah’s Quay Nomads.
