800 Julian Johnsson

Biography

Faroe Islander Julian Johnsson joined the Tigers in the 2001 close season, signing from Norwegian League side Sogndal. His arrival created an immediate positive impression – he was tall, strong, tackled, passed and created. He scored a few goals too, the first of which came in September 2001 against Swansea City – he was the full package. He dominated many games during his sole season at City, but in the end he returned to the Faroe Islands a year later because his wife couldn’t settle in the East Riding metropolis. He was a good player, so that was a shame.

Julian Schantz Johnsson began his football career at HB Torshavn in the Faroe Islands league and in September 1993 at the age of 18 he played the UEFA Cup Winners Cup against Romanian side Universitatae Craiova. In 1995 he signed for Danish side Vejle, only to return to Torshavn a year later and sign for B36. In 1998 he headed for Norway, playing 33 times in the Tippeligaen for Kongsvinger IL during the 1998 and 1999 seasons before spending the 2000 and 2001 seasons at rivals Sogndal, where he played regularly and scored plenty of goals prior to joining the Tigers.

Johnsson returned to Scandanavia in June 2002 to complete his playing days in the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Denmark. He stopped playing in 2010 and embarked in a coaching career that encompassed Danish sides Egebjerg and FC Svendborg, the latter side he managed between 2015 and 2016.

Johnsson was one of the Faroe Islands’ most decorated international players of his era, making his debut in April 1995 against Finland, scoring the first of his four international goals a month later against San Marino and going on to win 62 international caps in 11 years, closing his international career in September 2006 against Scotland.
