Biography

Striker James Briggs had two seasons at Hull City in the early 1910s, playing for the first team only twice during a single week in March 1913.
Briggs was born in West Moor, a colliery village to the north of Newcastle but grew up in Craghead, another colliery village near Stanley in County Durham. Briggs’ father died in the early 1900s and his mother, from Hanley in the Potteries, raised James and his three siblings at Craghead. Prior to joining the Tigers Briggs played for Craghead United while employed as a Putter, the man who moved loaded and unloaded wagons away from and towards a colliery coal face.
Briggs returned to County Durham in 1914, playing for West Stanley and returning to the coal mining trade. By 1939 he was a Deputy Overman, a quality control supervisor working underground. Briggs died in Stanley in 1965.
