690 David Jones

Biography

Striker David Jones-Quartey, known simply at the time as David Jones, joined Hull City in February 1993 on a short term deal. He started the majority of games during the remainder of the season and scored once in an April 1993 3-2 victory over Hartlepool United. Despite his regular start Jones was not retained and left the Tigers in the 1993 close season.

David Jones-Quartey was born in Harrow in North West London and had a career on the fringes of the Football League, travelling the world as well as many English clubs to find a game. After coming through the youth ranks at Watford it wasn’t until the latter part of 1987 that Jones came to the attention of English football watchers when he signed for Chelsea after a period spent in New Zealand. At the start of the 1988/89 season he signed for Bury and made his senior debut in September against Mansfield Town. By December 1988 he had moved to Leyton Orientwhere he made four senior appearances and scored his first senior goal in January 1989 against Aldershot. He ended the season making four appearances for Burnley then spent the summer of 1989 playing in the United States.

Jones started the 1989/90 season signing a short term deal at Ipswich Town, but make the first team at Portman Road and by November 1989 he had switched to Doncaster Rovers. At Doncaster the wanderer found his home and he spent two seasons at the Fourth Division club. His Doncaster debut in November 1989 was a remarkable arrival, he struck a hattrick at Rochdale, and he continued to score regularly for the rest of the season, netting 15 times in 34 starts, as well as twice receiving a red card. Retained for the 1990/91 season, scored three times in the first four games of the season but injury meant he missed five months of football and when he returned in February 1991 the goals had dried up. He started the 1991/92 season at Doncaster, making one start that took his total for the club to 49 appearances and 18 goals. In September 1991 he moved to Bury but in 12 appearances, 10 off the bench, he failed to score and later had a trial spell at Sheffield United. He was a free agent when he signed for the Tigers in February 1993.

Jones-Quartey went on to have short spells at four non-league clubs before starting a second career as cameraman for the BBC, satellite TV broadcaster Sky Sports and then Reuters. Settled in Doncaster, he later owned an energy commodity trading firm.
