68 Thomas Hedley

Biography

Centre forward Thomas Hedley joined the Tigers in January 1912 in the aftermath of Tommy ‘Boy’ Browell’s transfer to Everton. Hedley quickly impressed in the Tigers reserves team and he made two first team starts at the end of January 1912. However the signing of Sammy Stevens consigned Hedley back to the reserves and he left the club in the 1912 close season.

Thomas Hedley was born in the centre of Gateshead and started his footballing career at Northern Alliance side Jarrow Caledonians. In July 1910 he joined Woolwich Arsenal and spent a season scoring goals for the Gunners’ reserves but did not make the first team. He returned to Jarrow in the 1911 close season and had unsuccessful trials at Plymouth Argyle (in August 1911) and Birmingham (during November and December 1911) while serving the Caledonians between these trials, ahead of signing for Hull City.

No trace of his continued football career can be found, but by 1939 he was living in Jarrow and working as a labourer. He died in the Gateshead area in the spring of 1972.
