467 Neil Cubie

Biography

Right half Neil George Cubie hailed from Cape Town, South Africa, and joined the Tigers in July 1957. He had travelled to England by ship during October 1956 in search of his footballing fortune having toured Australia and New Zealand with the South African international side in September and October 1955, though he did not start any of the international matches played. He spent the 1956/57 season at Division Two side Bury but never broke into the Gigg Lane first team.

Cubie made four starts for City, two in September 1957 (which featured an inauspicious 0-6 thumping at Wrexham) and two on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 1957. He left City in the 1957 close season, joined Scarborough for a few months then returned to South Africa by ship in December 1958, disappointed, to resume his career as an engraver and printer.

Cubie died in Cape Town in March 1977.
