443 Ron Tulloch

Biography

Right half Roland “Ron” Tulloch was born in Pretoria, South Africa and came to England in December 1953 to seek his footballing fortune. He did not have an advanced arrangement in place with a club but City manager Bob Jackson learned of his journey, knew of his capabilities from recent footballing tours of South Africa and travelled to Southampton to meet Ron and sign him up for the Tigers.

Once the paperwork was complete Tulloch joined the City squad and played mainly in the reserves, though he did manage three starts during the 1954/55 season, the first during a December 1954 injury crisis when he deputised at inside right, then two more towards the end of the season when rival scouts were watching. Alas, Ron did not attract interest from other teams and he returned to South Africa, leaving Southampton by boat at the end of May 1955.

A year later in May 1956 an English FA XI was touring South Africa and Tulloch, by now playing for Pretoria-based side Berea Park, played against the English side for a Northern Transvaal XI. He also played against Preston North End for a Combined Transvaal XI in June 1958.
