Biography
Born in South Shields but raised in Hull, Hull Grammar School student and inside forward Charles Leslie “Les” Robson joined City as an amateur in 1949 and played for the East Riding FA Juniors eleven during the 1949/50 season. Les signed professional terms in May 1950 and made his first team debut for the Tigers six months later, scoring his only goal for City a week later in a 1-2 defeat at Brentford. In three seasons Robson managed only three appearances and he left the club in May 1953.
Robson joined Division Three North side Darlington in May 1953 and immediately established himself as a first team regular, scoring 15 senior goals in the 1953/54 season including a Boxing Day hattrick against Scunthorpe & Lindsey United. Despite missing two large chunks of the 1954/55 season he continued to impress and took his Quakers tally to 19 goals in 70 starts.
In July 1955 Robson joined Second Division side Liverpool but failed to break into the first team. In January 1956 he signed for Division Three North side Crewe Alexandra and scored twice in 14 starts as the Railwaymen finished bottom of the League and had to apply for re-election. Robson left Crewe in the 1956 close season and spent two seasons at Goole Town before his playing days wound down. He remained in the Hull area and died in Beverley in April 1988.
