Biography
Harold “Harry” Hall was born in Ecclesfield to the north of Sheffield, Harry and his brother Ellis were raised by their blacksmith father and Harry was trained as a stove grate moulder. In January 1906 both Harry and Ellis were given a trial by Hull City’s directors and a month later both were registered to play for the first team. While his brother Ellis was handed a debut in March 1906, Harry had to wait precisely a calendar year before making his debut in March 1907, having been a regular goalscorer in the City reserve team. Although Harry remained on City’s books until the 1908 close season, he made no further first team starts.
Hall joined Rotherham Town in September 1908 and spent two seasons with the Midland League side. In May 1910 he transferred to Huddersfield Town, who had just been elected to the Second Division two years after the club’s formation. Harry made 20 starts for the Terriers at outside right during the 1910/11 season and scored his only senior goal in an October 1910 FA Cup tie against non-league side Horsforth. Hall switched to Second Division rivals Grimsby Town in July 1911, however his time at Blundell Park was brief and he appeared to drift out of the game by the end of 1911.
Harry returned to live in his home town Ecclesfield with his wife and family and by 1939 was working in the local colliery. He died in the Sheffield area in the latter months of 1970.
