Biography

Goalkeeper Ted Goodall joined City in May 1937 after a successful season at North Shields FC in the North Eastern League. He quickly usurped the experienced George Maddison in goal, who had been the Tigers’ first choice number one for 14 years, and impressed enough to attract the attention of several clubs in the 1938 close season.
Goodall was born in South Shields and played for South Shields FC and Jarrow FC in his early 20s. He joined Chesterfield in May 1936 but within four months he had returned to the North East to join North Shields. He left for Hull City at the end of that season.
In May 1938 Goodall signed for Bolton Wanderers and made several starts in the First Division. Just as he announced his arrival in the top flight the Second World War put a brake on Goodall’s career at 27 years of age. He continued to play wartime matches for Bolton during 1940 and 1941, and also turned out for Rochdale in 1942. But when the war was over and football resumed in 1946 Goodall was no longer involved in the game. He returned to South Shields where he died in September 1978.
