264 George McKenzie

Biography

George McKenzie was an Scottish international amateur footballer whose work as a general practitioner dictated where he played his football. He was posted to a Hull surgery in November 1933 and was quickly introduced into the City first team by manager Hayden Green. McKenzie scored his first City goal against Oldham Athletic in mid-December 1933 and followed it up with a Boxing Day brace against Blackpool. A fourth goal came against Lincoln City in early February 1934 but by the end of the season George’s work took him to the North West.

George Duncan McKenzie was born in Portgordon, a small village near Buckie on the Banffshire coast between Inverness and Aberdeen. His father was a butcher in Portgordon who had been a footballer with Aberdeen and was later to become a Councillor before his untimely death in August 1933 when he was taken ill on a flight between Wick and Buckie. George was awarded a place to study medicine at Aberdeen University and having already assisted Buckie Thistle prior to commencing his studies, he joined the ranks of well-known Scottish League amateur side Queens Park. He played for the Hampden Park side for nearly five years and made over 100 starts. He had rejoined Buckie Thistle at the start of the 1933/34 season prior to his move to Hull.

McKenzie joined Stockport County in August 1934 but by November he had moved again, joining Cheshire League side Macclesfield Town. In March 1935 he was again on move, joining Cumberland side Kells United after accepting a posting in Whitehaven, a club that he captained for the 1935/36 season. He gave up playing football in 1936 and moved to Bolton, where he lived in a well-appointed town centre villa and worked as a GP. He remained in Bolton for the rest of his life, dying in December 1974.

While at Queens Park McKenzie was awarded Scotland amateur international honours. He started eight amateur internationals between March 1930 and April 1933 and scored two goals – the first in September 1930 against Ireland and the second in a March 1932 3-1 win against England that was played at Hampden Park, his ‘home turf’.
