Biography
Inside forward Tommy Flannigan joined the Tigers in May 1929 and spent only one season at the club. He made two first team starts towards the end of the season, in the aftermath of defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the FA Cup Semi Final, but failed to impress. In the 1930 close season he was placed on the transfer list for £750, which meant that he couldn’t play for another League side unless that fee demand was met.
Thomas Flannigan was born in Edinburgh and played local junior football while training as a hairdresser before joining Dundee in 1926. A year later he headed south to join Stoke City, spending two years in the Potters’ reserve side before joining the Tigers in 1929.
Hampered by the transfer fee on his head, Flannigan spent the next four years playing in lower league football, which was still possible while City held his Football League registration. He played in the Midland League for Loughborough, then ahen an appeal saw his transfer fee reduced he spent a season at Rochdale. He then had another two years playing for clubs in and around the Midlands, North West and North Wales – not even a three month sojourn to play for St Etienne in France was not enough to rekindle Flannigan’s interest in football and he retired a disillusioned man in 1934. By 1939 he was working as a cleaner in Stoke on Trent, he later moved to Durham where he died in May 1981.
