Biography

Scottish striker George Guyan joined the Tigers in December 1926 for what was reputed to be the club’s record fee paid at the time – a record that stood for only three months until City parted with £4,000 to sign Jimmy Howieson. Guyan slotted straight into the first team and returned a decent goal rate from the off. However in his second season at Anlaby Road Guyan was mostly usurped by two other Georges, Whitworth and Martin, for the centre forward shirt and he left the club the following summer.
Born in Aberdeen, Guyan was an apprentice boilermaker as a teenager before starting his senior career at Aberdeen and Dundee. But he was soon lured south of the border to play for South Shields, and it was his scoring record on the banks of the Tyne that led to City swooping for his services.
Guyan left the Tigers in the 1928 close season and moved to Welsh side Connah’s Quay. Here he found goalscoring form again as the Flintshire side won the Welsh National League North and Welsh Cup double. He went on to have further spells at several clubs in the South West, plus a short spell at Rochdale, netting 26 goals for Bath City in a single season. He ended his career in the Irish League and by 1939 he had returned to his first trade as a boilermaker in a South Shields shipyard. Later in life he returned to his native Aberdeen and died in 1984.
