Biography
Centre half Bob Scorer signed for the Tigers in April 1922 from North Eastern League side Felling Colliery and was quickly thrown into the first team for the last two fixtures of the 1921/22 season by manager Percy Lewis. Scorer started three more games in the first half of the 1922/23 season but when Bill McCracken took over as manager in February 1923 he preferred other centre half choices. Scorer was handed a free transfer and left the club in May 1923.
Scorer joined Division Three South side Bristol Rovers in November 1923 and quickly made his debut in the following month against Northampton Town. He spent two seasons with Rovers and made 38 appearances, ending the 1924/25 season playing at left half. Scorer transferred to Division Three North side Wigan Borough during the 1925 close season and came into the first team in October 1925. He made 25 senior appearances for Borough including two FA Cup starts during December 1925 against Crewe Alexandra.
He evidently made an impression because in April 1926 he switched to Division Three North rivals Crewe and ended the season with three starts for the Railwaymen. Scorer added a further five starts during the 1926/27 season then spent the 1927/28 season at Birmingham and District League side Shrewsbury Town before his career came to a close.
Scorer settled in Crewe when his playing days drew to a close and was closely associated with the club during the 1930s. During the Second World War Bob joined the armed forces and sailed on the ill-fated RMS Lancastria, a requisitioned Glasgow-built ocean liner that was sunk off the French coast in June 1940 while evacuating retreating troops from Northern France – estimates suggest that between 3,000 and 7,000 people died on board the severely overcrowded Lancastria during an airborne bomb attack, fortunately Bob escaped without injury. He remained in the Crewe area after the War, dying in the Cheshire town in June 1971.
