Biography
James Monteith Marshall was born in Wallsend to a father who worked as a shipyard joiner. James undertook his teenage apprenticeship in a engine works before serving the Durham Light Infantry and Worcestershire Regiment during World War 1. After the war he started playing football for Tyneside League side St Peter’s Albion, in late December 1920 his form encouraged Hull City to sign him up on a short term deal. After a spell in the Tigers’ reserves he made his first team debut in February 1921, replacing usual outside left Harry Wilson who was suffered from the ‘flu. This was Marshall’s only first team start for the club.
By August 1921 he had returned to Tyneside and joined North Eastern League side Preston Colliery, he may also have had a spell at Ashington during the 1922/23 season. By 1939 he was back living in Wallsend and working for a blacksmith, he died in Wallsend in March 1952.
