Biography
George Albert Davies was born in Prescot, Lancashire and was playing for Prescot FC in the Lancashire Combination when he came to the attention of Hull City, joining the club in June 1920. He spent his first few months in the Reserves but suffered a tragedy in December 1920 when his wife died shortly after childbirth. By February 1921 he was back in Hull and making his Football League debut at left half, he filled in at both left half and right half for the next three months and was retained by the Tigers for the 1921/22 season. He started four games in September 1921 before yielding to consistent left half Tommy Bleakley, George made his final appearance in late December 1921 and left the club in the 1922 close season.
Davies joined Division Three South side Merthyr Town in June 1922 and in South Wales he found a regular first team start early in the season. He dropped out of the side in early October 1922 and only returned regularly in the closing weeks of the season, playing in the half back and at inside right – he made a total of 18 starts for Merthyr.
In September 1923 he returned to the East Coast and signed for Division Three North side Grimsby Town, where he continued to play a peripheral role for the first team and made a total of 12 appearances in two seasons. In April 1924 he scored his only career senior goal against Accrington Stanley and left the Mariners in the 1925 close season.
Davies then spent another six years playing lower league football for Whiston, close to his Prescot home, then various North Wales and Lancashire sides. He returned to Merseyside and worked as a corporation lamplighter, living in the terraced houses close to Stanley Park and the grounds of both Everton and Liverpool. He died in Liverpool in November 1956.
