1163 Steven Alzate

Biography

Defensive midfielder Steven Alzate joined Hull City in September 2024, having been a free agent since his departure from Brighton & Hove Albion in June 2024.

Steven Alzate was born in Camden, Central London, to parents that hailed from Colombia, providing him with dual nationality.  He came through the academy ranks at League Two side Leyton Orient, signing his first professional contract in September 2016 and making his senior debut against Stevenage in February 2017 after sitting in the bench unused for three EFL Trophy ties earlier in the season.  He scored his first senior goal a week later in his second senior appearance against Newport County and by the end of the 2016/17 season his one goal in 12 appearances was attracting the attention of teams further up the league ladder.

In July 2017 Alzate joined Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, a fee of £100,000 being paid for his services.  He made his Seagulls debut in an October 2017 EFL Trophy tie against Oxford United, then made just one further senior appearance in the 2017/18 season while maintaining a regular start in the Premier League 2 Under-23 side.  In August 2018 Steven joined League Two side Swindon Town on a season-long loan, quickly winning a regular start in the Robins’ first team and scoring three goals in 26 appearances before a back injury led to his premature return to Brighton in January 2019.

At the start of September 2019 Alzate started an EFL Trophy tie for Brighton against AFC Wimbledon and within three weeks he was introduced to the Seagulls’ Premier League squad.  He made his first top flight appearance against Newcastle United at the end of September 2019 and remained in the first team squad for five months until a groin injury ended his season early in March 2020.

Steven started the 2020/21 season back in the Brighton first team squad and scored his first goal for the club in a January 2021 FA Cup tie against Blackpool, adding his first Premier League goal a month later against Liverpool.  He played less frequently during the 2021/22 season, a mid-season ankle injury that required surgery hampering his game time.  He opened the 2022/23 season with an August 2022 EFL Cup tie goal against Forest Green Rovers.

In September 2022 he joined Belgian Pro League side Standard Liege on a season-long loan and became an immediate first team regular, netting three goals in 29 appearances.  In September 2023 he returned to Standard Liege for s second season on loan and added two goals in 25 further appearances for Les Rouches.  Alzate left Brighton in June 2024 on expiry of his contract having scored three goals for the Seagulls in 54 senior appearances.

In November 2019 Alzate was called up to the Colombia senior international squad for the first time and made his international debut against Peru.  He won a second cap later that month against Ecuador, then added two more caps against Venezuela and Chile during October 2020.  After fifteen months out of the squad Alzate returned to the fold in January 2022 with another cap against Peru, then took his international tally to 7 caps with matches against Saudi Arabia in June 2022 and Mexico in September 2022.
