Biography

Tall defender and midfielder Finley Burns joined Hull City in August 2024 on a season long loan from Premier League side Manchester City.

Finley Jack Burns was born in Southwark, South London, and played for Southend United’s academy from the age of nine. In January 2017 he switched to the Manchester City’s academy with Southend receiving a six figure compensation fee. He made his debut for Manchester City’s Under-18 side in December 2018 and by the start of the 2019/20 season he was a regular in that side. He made his senior debut in an EFL Trophy tie against Bolton Wanderers in October 2019 and was an unused substitute in the FA Youth Cup final victory over Chelsea in November 2020, a match delayed by several months due to the COVID19 pandemic.

In September 2020 he made two further EFL Trophy appearances for Manchester City and became a regular starter for the reserves side in the Premier League 2. Having signed his first professional contract during the 2020/21 season, Burns made another two EFL Trophy appearances in August and October 2021, adding a start in a September 2021 League Cup tie against Wycombe Wanderers. Finley joined Championship side Swansea City on a half-season loan in January 2022 and made 3 appearances for the Swans.

Burns remained in the Manchester City setup for the whole of the 2022/23 season, adding three more EFL Trophy appearances. In August 2023 he joined League One side Stevenage on a season-long loan and started regularly at both centre back and centre midfield for Steve Evans’ side – he made 43 appearances in all competitions.

Burns was part of the England under-age setup as a teenager, making the first of 5 appearances for England Under-15 against Netherlands in December 2017. In January 2019 he made 3 appearances for England Under-16s, then in September 2019 he made a solitary appearance for England Under-17 against Austria. After a three year hiatus Burns made 3 appearances for England’s Under-20 side in September 2022 against Chile, Morocco and Australia.
