Biography
Attacking midfielder Liam Walsh joined Hull City at the end of January 2022 on a half season loan from Championship rivals Swansea City. He made his City debut in a disappointing defeat at Derby County in early February 2022 and struggled to impress new manager Shota Arveladze.
Liam Walsh was born and raised in Huyton, a suburb to the east of Liverpool. Liam entered the Everton scouting network at the tender age of 5 and by July 2014 he had signed a youth team scolarship contract, which was upgraded to his first professional contract in March 2015. After impressive performances for Everton’s under-18 and under-23 sides led to international recognition, Walsh was given his senior debut in January 2016 when he began a half-season loan at League Two side Yeovil Town – his first senior goal came a month later in February 2016 against Luton Town. This loan spell yielded one goal in 17 senior appearances but when he returned to Everton for the 2016/17 season his senior game time was limited to two Football League Trophy appearances for the Toffees’ under-21 side. In August 2017 he joined Championship side Birmingham City on loan but after just 3 appearances a change of manager at St Andrews froze Liam out and he returned to Everton ahead of leaving the Goodison Park side in January 2018 having made just 2 senior appearances for the Toffees.
In January 2018 Walsh joined Championship side Bristol City, signing a two and a half year deal and attracting an undisclosed but substantial fee. Making his debut in a January 2018 League Cup semi final tie against Premier League side Manchester City, Walsh made just 8 appearances for the Robins during the rest of the season. He continued to struggle to make an impression on the first team during the 2018/19 season, making just 10 appearances, then after scoring his first Bristol City goal in an August 2019 League Cup tie against Queens Park Rangers Walsh joined League One side Coventry City on a season-long loan. Coventry were crowned League One champions at the end of the season and Walsh was able to establish a regular first team place, scoring four goals in 34 appearances. Returning to Bristol City for the 2020/21 season, Liam made only three senior appearances to take his tally for the Robins to 25 appearances in three and a half years at Ashton Gate.
In July 2021 Walsh transferred to Championship side Swansea City and made his Swans’ debut two months later. However a change of management again saw Liam miss out on regular first team action and he had made only seven senior appearances for Swansea, the last against Hull City two days before his loan move to the Tigers. In the 2022/23 season Liam added a further 7 appearances but in the 2023/24 season he was used more regularly as an attacking midfielder. He left the Swans on expiry of his contract in May 2024 having scored two goals in 34 appearances across three seasons.
In August 2024 Walsh joined Championship side Luton Town and made his Hatters debut at the end of the month against Preston North End.
Born in England but also qualifying for Italy, Walsh played once for England under-16s in November 2012 against Wales, replacing Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. He made his England under-18 debut in September 2014 against Italy and won further under-18 caps against Poland in November 2014 and Russia in June 2015.
