1106 Di’Shon Bernard

Biography

Central defender Di’Shon Bernard joined Hull City in August 2021 on a season-long loan from Manchester United. He made his Tigers debut in a League Cup tie against Wigan Athletic and performed impressively for ninety minutes before missing the deciding spot kick in a penalty shoot-out. He made his League debut for City in late August at Fulham, matching up and performing well against agressive Serb forward Aleksandar Mitrovic and kept his place for several months. Di’Shon’s all-action style and impressive ball-playing skills came to the fore as the season progressed and City changed to a three centre backs formation, releasing Di’Shon to show his full defensive and attacking class. However he lost his place in February 2022 when Alfie Jones returned from injury.

Di’Shon Joel Bernard was born in Wandsworth, South West London and came through the academy ranks at Chelsea before switching to Manchester United’s under-18s setup in 2017. He made his Manchester United debut in a November 2019 Europa League tie against Khazakstan team Astana, scoring an unfortunate own-goal in a 1-2 defeat. In 2019 and 2020 he played six times for the Red Devils’ Under-23 side competing in the EFL Trophy. In October 2020 he joined Salford City on loan and made 31 appearances for the Ammies, scoring two goals against Carlisle United in December 2020 and Mansfield Town in January 2021.

Bernard returned to Manchester United for the start of the 2022/23 season but was absent until December 2022 when he played in an EFL Trophy game against Bolton Wanderers, then added two appearances in the Red Devils’ Premier League 2 reserves side. In January 2023 Di’Shon was loaned to League 1 side Portsmouth for the remainder of the season, playing a support role and making 10 appearances. By May 2023 Di’Shon had made seven appearances for Manchester United.

In August 2023 Bernard transferred to Championship newboys Sheffield Wednesday and made his debut in an August 2023 League Cup tie against Stockport County. He became a more regular first team when new manager Danny Rohl took over the reins and lifted the Owls away from the relegation places, ending his first season at Hillsborough with 36 appearances.

In June 2023 made his international debut for Jamaica against Qatar, scoring his first international goal against St Kitts & Nevis a month later.
