1076 Martin Samuelsen

Biography

Rangy and skillful attacking midfielder Samuelsen signed a two and half year contract with City in January 2020 and two days later came off the bench at Derby to make his debut. His game time during 2019/20 was limited by spells on the bench and injuries but he began 2020/21 season in the first XI. After a spell of rest he burst back into the first team scene in November 2020 with two fine performances in the EFL Trophy. However he was again absent with injury during the festive period and on the February 2021 transfer deadline day he joined Swedish Superliga side Aalborg BK on loan for the remainder of the season, making 14 appearances. Unable to win a contract at Aalborg, Samuelsen briefly returned to Hull City in the 2021 close season before leaving the club later in the summer.

Norwegian born Samuelsen was on Manchester City’s books as a teenager but switched to West Ham United when he was 18. He made a handful of first team appearances at West Ham, debuting in June 2015 during a Europa League qualifying round match against Maltese side Birkirkara. But it was during several loan spells that Martin cut his teeth in the professional game, including two spells at Peterborough United when he came to the attention of City manager Grant McCann.

In July 2021 Samuelsen transferred to his home town club, Norwegian Eliteserien side FK Haugesund. He made his debut in August 2021 against Molde and netted his first goal for Haugesund a month later against Odd. Over the next three seasons he played a peripheral role as Haugesund finished in the lower half of the Norwegian top flight – by the end of his fourth season in December 2024 he had scored seven goals in 64 appearances.

Samuelsen made over 30 appearances at various youth team categories from under-16 to under-21. He made his debut for the Norway senior international team in October 2016 against Iceland.
