1064 Liam Ridgewell

Biography

Centre back Ridgewell was signed in early February 2019 to add experience to City’s capable but short-handed defence.  He slotted straight into first team action as injury woes bit at Nigel Adkins’ play-off efforts.  While Liam’s organisational capabilities were not in question, his ability to keep up with nippy strikers certainly was and he moved on again that May.

A Londoner whose youth level club was West Ham, Ridgewell switched to Aston Villa at 16 and broke into the first team a couple of years later after a loan spell at Bournemouth.  He spent several years as a talented young defender on the fringe of the Villa first team before making the controversial switch to Birmingham City in 2007, in return for a £2m fee.  He was quickly made captain of the Blues and in five seasons he was a near ever-present, although he was absent for five months in 2009 after breaking a leg.  His St Andrews career peaked in 2011 when he captained the Blues to League Cup Final success at Wembley.  A year later he had fallen down the pecking order and moved a few miles west to Black Country rivals West Bromwich Albion.  A regular for two years, Ridgewell headed a lot further west in 2014 and signed for MLS side Portland Timbers. Once again Ridgewell was a first team regular and leader at Portland over a four year spell that ended with his release in January 2019.

In August 2019 Ridgewell signed a one year deal with Southend United, which was terminated early in January 2020. After a spell out of the game he joined the coaching staff at Dover Athletic in December 2020, working under former Tiger Andy Hessenthaler.

Ridgewell earned a single England under 19 cap and was then a regular for the under-21s during 2004 and 2005.
