Biography

Robbie McKenzie was a Hull-born youth team product who made his City debut in a League Cup tie at Doncaster Rovers in August 2017. A second League Cup appearance came at Sheffield United a year on, with his League debut at Rotherham United coming a week later. As the 2018/19 season developed Robbie played a bigger role in Nigel Adkins’ first team, selecting his throughout February and March as the Tigers recovered from a dreadful opening few weeks to finish the season in a mid-table Championship position.
He continued to play a supporting role to Grant McCann’s first team squad during the 2019/20 season including an impressive January 2020 FA Cup performance against Chelsea. But as the COVID19 pandemic affected the season Robbie was sidelined and did feature as City tumbled out of the Championship. McKenzie left Hull City in August 2020.
In August 2020 Robbie signed for City’s League One rivals Gillingham. He made his Gills debut in September 2020 against Southend United and was a regular presence in the first team, mainly coming off the bench during the second half of the 2020/21 season – his first goal for the Gills came in December 2020 against Rochdale. He held down a regular starting place during the 2021/22 season as Gillingham were relegated to League Two and during the 2022 close season he was offered and rejected an extended contract. However he failed to find another club and re-signed for Gillingham at the end of August 2022, a decision that proves wise a few months later when the ownership of the club switched to more progressive Galinson family. The new owners secured sufficient investment to help the Gills rise out of the relegation places and finish in mid-table, with McKenzie missing only twelve league matches. He was used more as a suad player during the 2023/24 season as Gillingham flirted with promotion before dropping away in the closing weeks.
The 2024/25 season saw McKenzie move into a midfield role, he netted six goals and ended the season as first team captain as his side again fell short of the play-offs. In May 2025 he committed to a further two years in the Medway Towns and was a constant first team presence at centre back and central midfield during the first half of the 2025/26 season.
