1033 Ondrej Mazuch

Biography

Powerful Czech international defender Mazuch joined City in August 2017 as part of Leonid Slutsky’s post-Premier League rebuilding programme at the KCOM.  His influence on the first team was positive, however his ability to exercise that influence was hampered by a series of niggly injuries – encapsulated neatly on the last day of Mazuch’s first season at Brentford when he hobbled off after six minutes clutching his twanged hamstring.  This injury was exacerbated during 2018/19 pre-season and he started the season once more on the treatment table, and by Christmas it was apparent that Ondrej was not capable of lasting 90 minutes when required.  A final appearance in January 2019 saw Ondrej again subbed off before half time and he left City the following summer.

Mazuch began his career at 1FC Brno but was snapped up by Italian side Fiorentina as an 18 year old.  This move did not go well and Ondrej failed to make an appearance for the Viola. In 2009 he switched to Belgian outfit Anderlecht where he established himself as a first team presence for two seasons.  He then spent three years in Ukraine with Dnipro before returning to his homeland in December 2015, signing for Sparta Prague.  He was not a first team regular for Sparta, and was made available to the Tigers for a cut-price 600,000 pounds fee.

In February 2020, in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mazuch signed for Czech side Mlada Boleslav where he made 13 appearances before switching to FK Teplice in January 2021. A year and a half at Teplice yielded one goal in 25 appearances, in July 2022 he joined Czechia lower league side TJ Ligmet Milin.

Mazuch won his first senior cap for the Czech Republic in 2010 and made the last of his four senior appearances in 2014.  Prior to that he was a very regular choice for the Czech youth sides, making over 50 appearances from under-16 to under-21 levels.
