1004 Isaac Hayden

Biography

Midfield general Hayden spent 2015/16 on a season long loan at Hull City, alongside his Arsenal teammate Chuba Akpom.  Hayden showed flashes of promise but was often kept out of the City first XI by the returning Jake Livermore.

Born in Chelmsford, Hayden joined Arsenal as a teenager and ascended to the first team as an 18 year old.  He made only two appearances for the Gunners before his departure.

His season at Hull City encouraged Newcastle United to part with an undisclosed fee for Hayden, who was handed a five year contract.  His first season saw him play an important role in the Toon’s promotion back to the Premier League, then he continued to be a part of Steve Bruce’s Newcastle first team squad for several years to come without ever becoming a genuine first name on the teamsheet type of player.  In June 2022 he joined Championship side Norwich City on a season long loan but persistent knee problems meant he made only 14 senior appearances all season, the last of which came in April 2023 against West Bromwich Albion.

In May 2023 it was announced that Hayden was available to other clubs and there was interest from Premier League new boys Luton Town until fitness issues revealed in a medical scuppered the move. He signed a season-long loan deal at Belgian Pro League side Standard Liege in early September 2023 and made his debut in mid-September against KAS Eupen, but that loan was curtailed in January 2024 after 11 appearances. Later in January 2024 he joined Championship side Queens Park Rangers on a half season loan and made 17 appearances as the R’s lifted themselves out of the relegation zone. He spent the first half of the 2024/25 season in the wilderness, contracted to Newcastle United but not involved in any first team action before joining Championship side Portsmouth in January 2025 on a half-season loan.

Hayden won caps at all junior levels from England under-16 to under-21, including under-20 caps during his season at Hull City. In November 2024 he made his senior international debut for Jamaica, under the management of Englishman and another ex-Tiger Steve McClaren.
