Biography

Progressive midfielder Lucas Gourna-Douath joined Hull City in August 2026 and was an early introduction to Sergej Jakirovic’s Premier League first team squad as the season started with two victories.

Lucas Gourna-Douath was born to parents of Central African Republic descent in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, a town in the south-eastern suburbs of French capital Paris. Despite his Parisian roots and his journey through local junior sides, he began his senior career in south-eastern France when signing for French Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne in August 2018. By November 2019 he was playing for Saint-Etienne’s B team and was introduced to the senior team at the start of the 2020/21 season, making his senior debut in September 2020 against Racing Club de Strasbourg. By January 2021 he was getting a regular start for Les Verts and that continued into the 2021/22 season. By May 2022 he had made 65 appearances for Saint-Etienne and scored one goal – against Marseille in April 2022.

In July 2022 Lucas transferred to Austrian Bundesliga side Red Bull Salzburg, the fifteen million euros paid was reputedly the largest fee paid by an Austrian club at the time. Injury meant he missed the opening four weeks of the season and he spent a week on loan at 2.Liga side FC Liefering, making 1 appearance. He made his Salzburg debut in an August 2022 Asutrain Cup tie against Union Gurten, which was closely followed by his debuts in both the Bundesliga and in European competition – in the latter he started matches against AC Milan, Chelsea and Dinamo Zagreb. He quickly became an established part of the Salzburg first eleven and that form carried into the 2023/24 season as he missed only four league games, played regularly in the Champions League and scored his first goal for Salzburg in a February 2024 Austrian Cup tie against LASK. He spent the first half of the 2024/25 season in the first team and his form was such that he was attracting interest from bigger leagues – in February 2025 he joined Italian Serie A side Roma on a half season loan, making 6 appearances.

Lucas returned to Salzburg during the 2025 close season but was used more sparingly in the first half of the 2025/26 season. In January 2026 he joined French Ligue 1 side Le Havre on a half season loan and made 15 appearances as the coastal side narrowly avoided relegation. Returning to Austria again for the summer, Lucas left Red Bull Salzburg to join Hull City in August 2026 having scored two goals in 95 appearances.

Gourna-Douath was recognised as one of France’s most promising young players during his early years at Saint-Etienne and Red Bull Salzburg, often captaining the international sides he played in. In September 2018 he made his debut for France’s Under-16 side against Denamrk and by May 2019 he had made 11 appearances. He scored one goal in 4 appearances for the Under-17 side during the 2019/20 season, then once the COVID19 pandemic had passed its peak he made his debut for France Under-19s in September 2021 against Russia – by March 2022 he had made 11 Under-19 appearances. During the 2022/23 season he made 2 appearances for France Under-20s, in October 2023 he made his first appearance for France Under-21s against Cyprus – he added two further Under-21 appearances in November 2023 against Austria and South Korea.
