Biography
Ramirez was a Uruguayan attacking midfielder who joined City on a season’s loan in September 2014. He was thrust into the first team by Steve Bruce but his form matched that of his teammates – patchy and largely ineffective. He scored his first and only City goal on Boxing Day 2014 at Sunderland in a 3-1 victory, but drifted out of first team contention for much of the remainder of his loan spell.
Born in estuarine meat city Fray Bentos, Gastón Exequiel Ramírez Pereyra began his career at Montevideo side Penarol, moving to Italy’s Bologna at the age of 20. Two fine seasons for the Rossoblu encouraged Southampton to part with twelve million pounds, but after a first season he fell out of favour at St Mary’s Stadium and spent time on loan at Hull City and Middlesbrough, for whom he signed when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2016. An unsuccessful 2016/17 season at the Riverside saw the Boro relegated from the Premier League and Ramirez sold to Italian side Sampdoria. Ramirez was a first team regular for Samp over the next four years as they maintained their place in the middle of the Serie A table.
In December 2021 Ramirez left Sampdoria and signed for Italian Serie B side Monza, where his one goal in 6 appearances played a small part in Monza’s rise to Serie A via the play-offs – although Gaston was an unused substitute throughout the closing weeks of the season and subsequent victorious play-off campaign. He left Monza in July 2022 and three months later in October 2022 he signed for Serie C side Virtus Entella, scoring twice in 29 appearances as Virtus qualified for the end of season play-offs only to lose out at the fourth round stage to Pescara.
In August 2023 Ramirez joined Argentinian top flight side San Lorenzo and made 10 appearances in the remainder of the 2023 season. Five months later in January 2024 he joined Uruguayan top flight Penarol, the club where he started his career fourteen years earlier, where he was a first team regular and team captain during the 2024 season. He left Penarol in December 2024 on expiry of his contract.
Ramirez made his debut for the Uruguayan senior team at the age of 19, during a friendly match against Indonesia, and has been a regular during several subsequent seasons.
