Biography
Ramirez was a Uruguayan attacking midfielder who joined City on a season’s loan in September 2014. He was thrust into the first team by Steve Bruce but his form matched that of his teammates – patchy and largely ineffective. He scored his first and only City goal on Boxing Day 2014 at Sunderland in a 3-1 victory, but drifted out of first team contention for much of the remainder of his loan spell.
Born in estuarine meat city Fray Bentos, Gastón Exequiel Ramírez Pereyra began his career at Montevideo side Penarol, moving to Italy’s Bologna at the age of 20. Two fine seasons for the Rossoblu encouraged Southampton to part with twelve million pounds, but after a first season he fell out of favour at St Mary’s Stadium and spent time on loan at Hull City and Middlesbrough, for whom he signed when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2016. An unsuccessful 2016/17 season at the Riverside saw the Boro relegated from the Premier League and Ramirez sold to Italian side Sampdoria.
Ramirez made his debut for the Uruguayan senior team at the age of 19, during a friendly match against Indonesia, and has been a regular during several subsequent seasons.
