977 Ahmed Fathi

Biography

A midfield general of considerable repute for the Egyptian national team, Fathi joined the Tigers in January 2013 alongside striker Gedo.  He failed to nail a place in the City side though and made only one start for the upwardly mobile Tigers.

Fathi’s football career began at Egyptian side Ismaily, rather grandly known as The Brazilians of Africa, and at the age of 23 his form encouraged Sheffield United to sign him up.  After only three appearances for the Blades in eight months Ahmed returned to Egypt signing for Al Ahly.  He had a short spell in Kuwait before establishing himself at the Cairo side as a first team regular.  Shortly after his spell at City, Fathi switched to Umm Salal in the Qatari League, but a year later he returned to Al Ahly. In 2020 he joined the splendidly named Egyptian side Pyramids FC, continuing to play into his late 30s.

Fathi won his first senior cap for Egypt at the tender age of 17 and has since amassed well over 100 caps, being named in the team of the tournament for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.
