Biography

Goalkeeper Stockdale joined City in November 2012, initially on a one month loan deal then for the remainder of the season that ended in promotion to the Premier League. Stockdale performed reliably throughout his time at City.
Hailing from Leeds, Stockdale’s career began at York City where he made his senior debut at 17. He made just one senior appearance for York in May 2003 and had two loans with non-league sides before leaving Bootham Crescent. He moved to Darlington in August 2006 at a time when the club was collapsing, after two years and 54 senior appearances he was picked up by Fulham.
He was an irregular in the Cottagers first team, spending several spells on loan, but spent six years with the West Londoners and made 52 appearances, plus another 55 appearances on loan to four clubs and 24 appearances for Hull City. In August 2014 he joined Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion and he was the Seagulls’ first team keeper for three seasons, which ended in promotion to the Premier League after 139 senior appearances.
Brighton did not retain his services in 2017 and Stockdale moved to Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham City. A first team regular in his first season, he drifted out of the side under Garry Monk after 40 appearances and had loan spells at Southend, Wycombe and Coventry, making a further seven appearances. In September 2020, with the Chairboys elevated to the Championship for the first time in their history, Stockdale signed a permanent deal at Wycombe, though he found time in the first team hard to win and moved to Stevenage on an emergency loan in February 2021, returning to the Wycombe a few weeks later as the Chairboys battled at the foot of the table and were relegated by a narrow margin on the final day of the season. Stockdale was a League One ever-present for Wycombe Wanderers in the 2021/22 season, adding 69 appearances to the 4 he had previously made for the club on loan.
In June 2022 he joined League One side Sheffield Wednesday and made 27 appearances during the 2022/23 season that ended with the Owls winning promotion to the Championship via the play-offs (though Stockdale sat on the bench during the end of season campaign). Wednesday released Stockdale in May 2023 and he immediately joined his first professional club, Conference National side York City, as player and Head of Recruitment – he left the Minstermen a year later in April 2024 having added 7 appearances to his career tally. His pause from football afforded him time to focus on his property company that he co-owned with his wife.
In early August 2024 Stockdale was appointed assistant manager at National League North side Blyth Spartans, working under another ex-Tiger and former Newcastle United and Peru superstar Nobby Solano. By the end of August 2024 Solano had been dismissed and in September 2024 David was elevated to caretaker first team manager, a role that lasted only six weeks before Stockdale himself was sacked in October 2024 after a change of ownership for the Spartans. In February 2025 Stockdale was appointed first team manager at National League North side Farsley Celtic, another club in the middle of tumultuous change after the previous chairman had resigned.
Stockdale was twice included in England senior squads in 2011 and 2012, but was never capped.
