Biography
Joshua Henry Turner was born in Wallsend near Newcastle Upon Tyne to a father who worked in a brass foundry and hailed from Norfolk. Henry himself worked in the brass foundry as a finisher during his teenage years, while also playing local football. Turner came to the attention of Hull City’s scouting network after scoring 18 goals for Tyneside League side Wallsend Elm Villa during the first half of the 1913/14 season.
Joining the Tigers in February 1914, Turner scored in the first minute of his Reserves’ debut against Leeds City. Able to play as a forward and a half back, Turner’s first team debut came in October 1914 when he conceded a penalty after handling the ball. He made another five starts for the Tigers during the 1914/15 season and his two starts at inside forward in January and February 1915 yielded three goals – two against Clapton Orient in a 3-0 win and a consolation goal against Derby County in a 1-4 defeat.
The suspension of football in the 1915 close season drew a close to Henry’s City career. He returned to Wallsend and married, then in 1927 he emigrated to USA to live with his brother John in New York City. Henry visited England for five months in 1938 before returning to the United States, he died in the South Ozone Park district of Queens, New York City in October 1967.
