Biography
Goalkeeper Amos joined Hull City in July 2012 on a season long loan. Thrust straight into the first team, Amos’s form started out average and then deteriorated – clearly a talented player, but not full of confidence. By Christmas he was out of the team and returned to Manchester early in January 2013.
Benjamin Paul Amos was born in the Cheshire town of Macclesfield and was associated with Crewe Alexandra’s renowned academy as a youngster. In 2001 he joined the Manchester United academy system and worked his way through the ranks, playing for the Red Devils’ Under-18s side while still just 15 years of age. He signed his first trainee contract in July 2006 and served the Under-18s during the 2006/07 season, missing the FA Youth Cup final in April 2007 due to an injury. Ben made his debut for United’s Reserves side in November 2007 and began to train and travel with the first team squad.
His first team debut for Manchester United came in September 2008 when he started a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough and he continued to travel with the first team for the rest of the 2008/09 season. In October 2009 he joined Championship side Peterborough United on a one month loan and made one appearance against Barnsley, then in March 2010 he joined Norwegian side Molde on a three month loan, debuting against Rosenborg and making 8 appearances in total.
At the start of the 2010/11 season Amos made two further appearances for Manchester United’s first team, in the League Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers and in the Champions League against Valencia, before joining League One side Oldham Athletic on a half season loan in January 2011, making 16 appearances before returning early to United in March 2011. After four more senior appearances for Manchester United during the 2011/12 season, including his Premier League debut in January 2012 against Stoke City, his move to Hull City in July 2012 continued his development.
In November 2013 Amos started two months on loan at League One side Carlisle United where he made 9 appearances, then in January 2015 he joined Championship side Bolton Wanderers on a two month loan, making 9 appearances. In June 2015 Amos was released by Manchester United after fourteen years at the club – in total he made 7 senior appearances for the Red Devils.
In July 2015 Amos signed a lengthy and lucrative contract at Championship side Bolton Wanderers and was a first team fixture during his first season with the Trotters. In August 2016 he joined Championship side Cardiff City on a season long loan, competing with ex-Tiger Allan McGregor for the keeper’s jersey and making 16 appearances. In July 2017 Amos was again loaned out, this time for the season to League One side Charlton Athletic where he was ever-present and made 50 senior appearances. In July 2018 Ben returned to London and signed a season long loan deal with Championship side Millwall where he made 15 appearances – ahead of this move press statements made by Bolton’s chairman revealed that Amos was benefitting from a £20,000 per week wage deal, which explained why the potless Trotters were so keen to loan him out. As Bolton descended into financial meltdown, Amos left the club in July 2019 having made 53 appearances for the club.
In July 2019 Amos signed a two year deal with Championship side Charlton Athletic. His August 2019 debut for the Addicks in a League Cup tie against Forest Green Rovers was his only appearance of the 2019/20 season as Charlton were relegated, but Ben re-established himself in the first team at the start of the 2020/21 season and finished that term an ever-present in League One, taking his Charlton tally to 49 senior appearances..
In June 2021 he signed for League One rivals Wigan Athletic and was ever-present for the Latics as they won the league title and rose to the Championship. He was first choice keeper for much of the 2022/23 season as Wigan finished bottom of the Championship table and returned to League One and was retained for the 2023/24 season, but was used as a backup first team bench sitter and and only started in four Cup ties. He left Wigan Athletic in May 2024 having made 83 appearances.
In July 2024 Amos signed for newly relegated League Two side Port Vale, where he was second choice from the bench to first team starter Conor Ripley.
Amos was a decorated international choice during his younger days at Manchester United. He made his debut for England Under-16s in October 2004 against Wales, while still just 14 years of age, and added a second Under-16 cap in March 2005 against Ivory Coast. Between September 2005 and March 2007 he made six appearances for the Under-17s, in April 2008 he made one appearances for the Under-18s then in October and November 2008 he made two appearances for the Under-19s against Serbia and Germany. This was followed by a solitary appearance for the Under-20s against Italy in March 2009. In March 2011 Ben received his first call-up for England’s Under-21 side but was an unused substitute against Iceland. His Under-21 debut came against Israel in September 2011 and he added two further Under-21 appearances while on loan at Hull City, against Azerbaijan in September 2012 and Northern Ireland in November 2012.
