952 Hope Akpan

Biography

Midfielder Akpan joined City at the age of 19 in March 2011 on a two month loan.  He played only two games and made no lasting impression.

Liverpudlian Akpan joined Everton as a child and progressed through the ranks to make his senior debut in 2009 in a Europa League tie.  Following his loan to City, Hope was released by Everton and he joined Crawley Town.  After a season and a half in the first team at Broadfield Stadium he signed for Reading where he again became a regular starter.  He moved back north in 2015 signing for Blackburn Rovers, after two seasons at Ewood Park he joined Burton Albion on a free transfer in July 2017.  In July 2018 he moved on again to Bradford City, a club he left in the 2020 close season after 54 appearances and six goals.  After a short sabbatical Akpan joined Finnish side SJK in January 2021 but by the summer he had returned to England and spent the 2021/22 season at non-league sides Atherton Laburnum Rovers and Widnes before hanging up his boots and focusing on establishing a health food restaurant empire in Hale, Cheshire.

Akpan’s parents hailed from Nigeria and he chose to represent the Super Eagles in 2013, making his senior international debut a year later and ending up with four caps for his country.
